separate and good : Kindle DX, Free 3G, 9.7" E Ink Display, 3G Works Globally

I don't generally write reviews, but I hope this one will be beneficial for other scientists who are contemplating a Kindle Dx. My use for the Dx will be separate from most of the users who have posted reviews. I enounce a library of nearly 4,000 Pdf manuscripts/grants/documents. I probably have minimal use for eBooks from the Kindle Store. The amount of Pdfs is permanently growing as new investigate manuscripts are published (and downloaded to my computer). My principle reasons for purchasing a Dx were to:

1) Carry the electronic equivalent of binders of Pdfs with me when traveling. An iPod for Pdfs. This is a metaphor that works for the way that I view an eReader, though it probably doesn't apply equally well to everyone.

2) Have an easier way to read papers when traveling. Easier means not worrying about battery life, unfurling a laptop in a cramped airplane, or carrying a bag full of papers.

3) sacrifice eye strain from staring at a computer screen by interesting serious reading from the laptop screen to the Dx.

From my first use, I think the Dx is a noteworthy success. Text in manuscripts looks great. Figures from manuscripts do not render well in portrait mode if there is a lot of detail; switching to scenery mode helps substantially. Zoom into personel images/sections of Pdfs would be welcome.

Navigating large numbers of Pdfs from the home screen is currently clumsy. Lack of directory retain to institute large numbers of files is an issue. I've read about users using complex naming conventions to use 'search' as an indirect way to find files. Renaming hundreds (or thousands) of files to make them easier to find is not a great solution. I theorize this will improve in time, either straight through a firmware modernize to this gadget or in the next generation of hardware.

I'm also hoping against hope that one or more of the reference employer software providers (Bookends, I'm looking at you) realizes that their software is to the Kindle as iTunes is to the iPod. If I could manage the article of my Kindle straight through a reference manager, I would be thrilled. The idea of downloading a paper and syncing it in one step to the Kindle to take with me is absolutely appealing. This wouldn't completely overcome the problem with a flat file hierarchy once the papers are on the Kindle, but it would help institute getting article onto and off the device.

The biggest surprise to me is the functionality of the web browser. Yes, it is pokey to render pages. No, I wouldn't want to use it to web surf. But if I had a destination web site that is heavy on content, I think reading on the Kindle will be vastly first-rate to reading on the iPhone or other mobile/tablet devices. I do doubt, however, that wireless data entrance will remain free on the Kindle long-term. I can't fantasize how Amazon will be able to continue subsidizing the data costs. I think that this is a feature that should be enjoyed while it lasts, but I wouldn't be surprised if it goes away at some point in the future.

Though it adds another $50 to the cost, I think the matching case is attractive, functional, and creates an easy-to-carry package.

So is it worth the high cost? I don't think I (or anyone) can absolutely rate that until determining how well it integrates into daily work habits. I theorize that I will get heavy use out of it, but then I read a ton of Pdfs. I do hope that the Pdf retain for dictionary lookup, highlighting, and commentary improves, but I base my present on what the stock does - not what I would like it to do.

Hope this helps other heavy Pdf users!

Kindle Touch 3G is Not a 3G Web Browser---A social service Reminder : Kindle Touch 3G, Free 3G + Wi-Fi, 6" E Ink Display

I am writing this review from the perspective of being a long-time Kindle user vs. Man brand new to the Kindle experience.

From an unabridged experience, and inspecting the price of a Kindle with free 3G, WiFi capabilities, and a touch screen, this Kindle Touch Screen ("Kts") is a pretty good bargain. From a size standpoint, it is obviously not as long as my Kindle Keyboard model ("Kkb"), but you wouldn't expect it to be because - ahem - there is no keyboard!

I was in for a surprise when I opened up the box: in the miniature space carved out to hold the micro-Usb cable, which you need to charge the unit, had nothing in it. In other words, no power cord to get the thing running. A quick phone call to Amazon's exquisite buyer support, and a amiable agent named Mary Ann, has a change on its way to me. finding as I have way too many Kindles in my household, I found a power cord and put it on the charger for about an hour before playing with it.

First, let's talk about the "pros" of the Kts model:

The display is much crisper and darker than the Kkb model. I put a page of the same book on both the Kts and the Kkb side-by-side and not in a cover (didn't want the cover to give an optic illusion or anything), and this model's text is much better. I also located these two models against a Kindle 2, and you can see the improvement in the screen potential with each new model (and the Kkb is still darker than the K2 two years into it).

Web surfing speed with the WiFi highlight on the Kts is a miniature faster than the Kkb. Doing a side-by-side test I tried the movable websites of Fox News and Cnn and they popped right up, maybe a half second faster on the Kts model. Trying the movable websites of Msnbc and the Houston review were slower than Christmas, but that is commonly the case in my experiences with most movable devices trying to hit those two websites. I'm not much of a web surfer with my Kindle, so that highlight is indubitably hard for me to evaluate. When I have my Kindle, I commonly want to read a book vs. Surf the web or check email.

The on/off button is not a slider like former versions of Kindles, but is a push-button. You have to make a deliberate "push" with the button to make it go to sleep vs. Sometimes my Kkb model will bump against my shirt or jeans and hit the sleep mode in the middle of the page. I think this is an improvement.

Now for the "cons" of the Kts model:

I indubitably don't care for the touchscreen. I thought I would, indubitably I thought it would be the best thing since sliced bread, but it is a pain in the neck. I also have man fingers - which means my finger pads are larger than most women and children - and there have been many times with my short contact with the Kts I meant to touch one thing and ended up going somewhere else entirely because a link right next to the one I wanted was pressed first. I even pulled out a ballpoint pen top to try to "tap" the right thing, but I had the same problem.

There are no page turn buttons - also the on / off button I mentioned above there are indubitably no buttons at all. To turn a page forward, you need to tap the right-hand side of the screen. To page back, you guessed it, you need to tap the left-hand side of the screen. After using a Kindle for over three years now, I've already been "trained" by Amazon on how to turn pages. Sometimes you think the page send didn't register, so you tap it again only to find out it did but there was a delay; now you're one page ahead of where you wanted to be. I didn't outline that out until about the third time when I was reasoning the author of a short story just wasn't development sense. When I'm reading a book, I get rather absorbed in the process, and "tapping" to page turn gets me distracted (let alone jumping pages ahead of where I want to be). I wonder how much tapping the screen can physically take before the screens start breaking?

Navigation is rather cumbersome. If you're in the middle of a book or web page, for example, and want to go back to your home screen (or to a separate book), I initially thought you had to embark on the menu bar by pressing and keeping near the top of the screen, then start pressing the back arrow buttons. I would think most people expect to see a "Home" option if you push the "Menu" button. There is a "home" key but you would never know it: it looks like 4 horizontal unlabeled lines that I initially took for air exhaust vents (they are indubitably buttons). It would have been helpful to have a label on next to it or, Heaven forbid, a quick start paper menu to get you up and running.

Overall, if you couldn't tell, I'm not too impressed with the Kts model. It seems as there were a lot of shortcuts taken to get the price down lower, and the formula of performance is much separate than what I am used to - I perceive that had to be done primarily because there are no buttons. However, when I'm reading, I want to flee and not have to remember too many exact motions and steps: I just want to read! I hope, however, this new and improved screen is put into all models of Kindle (except the Fire) as it is much superior.

If you're happy with your "button" versions of the Kindle, I'd stick with them!

Vizio 8" -- after two days : VIZIO 8-Inch Tablet with WiFi - VTAB1008

this is a great tablet. A diminutive slow on power up, like most Vizio products, but once up it works great. Easy to use with Android store, hopefully the apps will catch up with the Vtab.. A lot of apps I wanted, won't run or download from Android store.

Biggest issue is the fragile power connector on the unit (micro usb connector). If you plan on using this while plugged in, beware!!! This thing looks as tho it will break with diminutive or no pressure on it. Be sure to increase the warranty or get assurance on it!!!
